Arrived early for an appointment, so I sat down and did a few drawings of dogs. It seems to help if I focus on one subject matter and keep drawing quick things.
I know, it’s hard to believe, two posts in one week. Very rare in my world. I promised yesterday to post some pictures of my recent drawings. I remembered my camera cord; so I had to post again!
I used a blue zig marker to draw this while I watched tv the other night.
All the pens and things I use. My colorful bag is filled with my Zig markers and Faber Castell Pitt Pens. My travel Winsor Newton watercolor case. The smaller case is a Sherpani eye glasses case that I use to carry my watercolors and drawing pens.
Today, everything went wrong right from the start. I forgot my scarf, and spend the whole day chilled. I forgot to wear a belt and spent the entire day pulling my pants up, and overall just felt behind on everything. Call me spaz today!
So the above picture is from photobooth because I FORGOT my cord that connects to my camera. Trust me, I don’t like to put pictures of me in my blog posts, well sometimes I can’t help it. Anyway, I had some pics of my newest drawings that I am waiting to find time to turn into paintings. (I should mention it has taken me all day to write this post too; I write a thought and then I have to do something else)
Over the last few months I have been trying to build my art supplies. Every month I spend some funds at Dick Blick. Where I live; there are no stores to buy supplies. The closest is an hour and a half away and it is pretty pricey. So I order online and have it shipped to me.
Speaking of materials; I have been playing around with different types of drawing pens and markers. I have tried Micron, Staedtler, Sharpie, and Copic. Overall, I have been most happy with Copic. Micron is a close second, but I am not in love with the black. It is more of a warm black and I seem to be more attracted to a cooler black. Now, lets talk specifics on Copic. I bought a couple of the Copic drawing pens, and the multi liners. I LOVE the multi liner in .3, .5., and .8. It is easy to make marks with and the width is perfect for me. The drawing pens were a little more difficult to draw with. Maybe it is me, the user, but I found it tedious to force a mark.
As for markers, I love my Zig Memory System writers. They are dual ended, with a broad tip and a fine line tip. I like the colors and the marks they make. I use them to sketch with and also to draw into my paintings. The marks they make on paint are translucent and add the right touch to my work.
I was inspired to write about this today because, I went almost two weeks with out a sketchbook. Silly me, finished my last one, and didn’t have another on hand. I was finally able to get to a craft store and stock up. I couldn’t wait to sit down and draw. Hopefully, I will be able to post a couple pics tomorrow!
I have been a busy bee drawing almost every day! That is a huge accomplishment for me. I often times get caught up only doing what I need to and forget to stop and spend time doing something I enjoy. I was driving home from school one day and started paying attention to things that I usually just drive by. It made me think about how much I miss day to day because I am used to it or just take it for granted. Since that day, I have been making a point of paying attention to everything that happens. It just amazes me how much we all miss when we just go through the motions of our daily lives.
I am also trying to fit “creative time” into my routine when I get home from work. So far, so good. Most of the time it is sitting on the couch with the tv on and my sketchbook and markers out on the coffee table. I am pretty good at drawing and watching tv. Not sure how I do it, but it works.
Drawing was always more of a chore for me, mostly because I didn’t think I was ever really good at it. This past year, I have discovered a style of drawing that works for me. I always felt that drawing was suppose to be realistic and precise. Well, after eight years teaching elementary art, I realized it is more fun and more challenging to draw with a more whimsical, child-like approach.
Hopefully I can get some more posts up with more snapshots of my work. Enjoy!
Hey everyone, thanks for the supportive comments on facebook after my last post. It means a lot to know I have such great friends that care! I don’t have many emotional days anymore but a few sneak in here and there and it helps me to get my feelings out. I have had a much better couple days and feel very inspired.
I have a strong desire to sit down and create. Lots of ideas brewing and no time to place them on paper. My schedule is frantic these days. Hopefully I can find some down time tonight to work at home. Probably not but it doesn’t mean I wont try. Christmas is right around the corner and my goal is to make things for close friends and family members. I better get working because the ski season is quickly coming and we all know that when the snow flies I want to be making turns on the snow.
Thanks again for all the positive energy you have sent my way!
Catch up is what i have been playing these last few weeks. May is always so busy for me and I often times have to put my own creative explorations away while I take care of my day job responsibilities.
I have heard many Art Teachers say that they get so caught up in teaching, they forget to make his or her own art. I discovered this was happening to me. So, last year, I decided to make an effort to carve away time to make my own art. It has been a lot of fun to find the creative juices again. It has also been a huge struggle to motivate myself and figure out what to do. Jeez, I can motivate and inspire children, but not myself!
So I have been digging to find something that I want to draw or paint. Patterns and line are always fun for me to draw but lately I have been feeling like I need to stretch beyond that and find something new. I also want to one day find my own signature style. I feel like my work is all over the place.
Dreams for the future: I want to open a studio so I can teach summer classes to children and adults. I think it would be a fun challenge and would allow me to have a space to personally create too. We will see……
Worked on a new piece today during my break…..another inspiring piece to keep me going! I tried to think of one word adjectives to describe myself! I was able to come up with a lot! Does that mean I am full of myself?
Last night I couldn’t sleep….go figure. So I worked in my journal and created some new entries. I have been doing a lot of soul searching lately and have felt the need to write down anything that keeps me positive.
Yay! It’s Friday! Last week it felt like we were finally having winter. This week it feels like spring! I have my classroom window open and can hear the kiddos yelling at recess. I don’t think I am ready for those sounds or for spring yet. I want to keep skiing! I want more snow!
This afternoon I will be performing the dance moves to Thriller with my 4th and 5th graders. We learned the dance at Summer camp. It took a lot to learn it and the kids wanted to have an encore. Why not! It was so much fun to learn and it is nice to brag about!
Here are a few drawings I was able to squeeze in this week. The first drawing was for Illustration Friday. The topic was Perspective. Enjoy!
During the winter months Tuesday nights are spent at the Matterhorn Ski Bar eating pizza and enjoying a drink with friends. There are very few Tuesdays that I have not spent there when the snow is flying. I look forward to the opportunity to get out mid-week and socialize. After leaving there last night, I was struck with an idea for a new illustration. Well honestly, a few illustrations. Let me know what you think.
